Both galleries at the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum & Art Gallery are filled this month by six artists working from one broad question:
Where did you get that idea?
The exhibition, which runs from Oct. 1 to 24, features Linda Franklin, Maureen Light, Susan Miller, Lyn Richards, Carol Schlosar and Elizabeth Sigalet.
The artists are members of Scholars without Institutions, a collective built around self-directed study rather than a conventional advanced art program.
Members choose instructors and areas of study, then use lectures, reading, research and discussion as part of their artistic practice.
For this exhibition, their shared research has centred on place.
That work has taken the group through subjects including philosophy, botany, cultural geography, spirituality, civic life and environmental advocacy.
The common question is broad:
How do the places we live shape us, and how do we shape them in return?
The answers are not meant to look the same.
Each artist has developed a separate body of work from the same general line of inquiry.
“Where Did You Get That Idea?” remains on display until Oct. 24 at the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum & Art Gallery, 3415 Pleasant Valley Road.
The gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Admission is free.
