The path leading from the entrance of Memorial Park to Armstrong’s cenotaph now has a name: Veterans Way.

The City announced the honorary naming Sept. 29, saying the project grew from a request by Royal Canadian Legion Branch No. 35.

The Legion had approached council with the idea of creating both a commemorative veterans crosswalk and a named pathway through Memorial Park.

The crosswalk was unveiled in June.

Council then directed staff to work with the Armstrong Spallumcheen Parks & Recreation Commission on the pathway. The commission supported the name Veterans Way and a refresh of the existing park signage.

Mayor Joe Cramer said the crosswalk, pathway and cenotaph now form a connected route of remembrance through the park.

The project is small as municipal projects go.

That may be part of its strength.

There is no new building attached to it. It takes a path people already walk and gives it a specific meaning.

Crosswalk, pathway, memorial.

One line through the park.
